Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down: Johnny Cash's spirit to be recaptured in first meeting of alternative to traditional church

Some may call it a church, but SUNDAY MORNIN' COMIN' DOWN is actually more like an informal, musically-based guilt-free haven for individuals recovering from fundamentalism and religious abuse---and it is an unorthodox alternative to church for those who are reluctant to attend traditional churches.

The first meeting will be held on Sunday morning at 9 am, 10/17/10 on the patio of Starbucks on Hageman and Calloway in Bakersfield.

We will celebrate our first day, and all that is represented in the new name of this alternative to traditional church, by singing Johnny Cash songs, along with some of his favorite hymns.  This will be followed by a period of sharing, not victim-based sob stories, but empowering survivor stories of those who have survived years of psychological abuse from the pulpit, or from aggressive, control freaks disguised as fellow churchgoers.

The concept flows from a Christian humanism perspective, where being a Christian means being free from double, catch 22 messages combining fear and grace.  We embrace what it means to be human, while embracing the arts, scientific inquiry, and truth wherever it may be found.

You won't be force-fed faith, and there will be plenty of room for doubt in this alternative to traditional church.  You will be encouraged but never forced to question authority.  A high value is placed on individual, creative thinking.  Your psychological dimension will be highly respected and valued as well.

You won't be asked to leave your brain or your body at the door.  This is a holistic community.  And if you play a musical instrument, bring that with your brain and your body.  In the words of a great Nirvana song, "COME AS YOU ARE!"
