Rising stars on the folk side of the nu bako sound: Introducing Kenny Reeves

Rising star Kenny Reeves

Welcome to the new BSU series, Rising stars on the folk side of the nu bako sound.  I'm Dr. BLT, and I'll be your host.

There are distinct similarities between the voice of Kenny Reeves and that of John McCrae, frontman for the band, Cake, whose band has performed twice at Buck Owens Crystal Palace, and who once joined Buck on stage at that very palace to sing a duet version of Buck's big hit, Excuse Me, I have a Heartache.

As a poet, Reeves has the poet skills of a Merle-Haggard-Meets-Bob-Dylan.  I discovered Reeves working at his day job at Starbucks on Rosedale Highway near Calloway in Bakersfield.  He's extraordinarily humble for a man of his talent, and it comes across in this tune, a song he wrote that allows us to consider the truism, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," from a whole new perspective.  If you want a flavor from the folk side of the nu bako sound movement, sample this.  It's called...

a person sees a revolution
another sees deterioration
when one can see the evolution
of a newer generation

I tried to hold no expectations
I try to see it as all of those things
'cause I know when judgment day comes
nobody has to answer to me

one sees a lowdown, no-good hooker
one sees a poor, lost daddy's girl
one sees no self-respect while looking
at a dirty, yet priceless pearl
one sees a tatoo as onset meaning
one sees demonic influence pain
one sees a cool design than gets it
torn on top of the back of his leg

I tried to hold no expectations
I try to see it as all of those things
'cause I know when judgment day comes
nobody has to answer to me
I tried to hold no expectations
I try to see it as all of those things
'cause I know when judgment day comes
nobody has to answer to me

    Hahaha!

Doc, you wouldn't believe how ironic this is but Kenny and I are somewhere down the line related.

Long story short, I think the musical talents run in our family.

Not to worry, the nu bako sound rising stars are typically a little shy. That's what makes them awesome.

oh and by the way, a few of the lyrics you have on here arent quite right. not to worry though...

one sees a tatoo as unsaid meaning
    one sees demonic influenced pain
one sees a cool design than gets it
drawn upon the back of his leg...

I like the lyrics to this song, it does a good job of pointing out how different people can perceive the same situation, and how important it is not to judge. No one has a right to judge or hold expectations for another person unless they are perfect themself.

I love the part in the song where it says, "I know when judgment day comes
nobody has to answer to me" because when we die we only have to answer to God and only God should judge us. (But that's just what i get from it)

The music of this song reminded me of a Johnny Cash song. Which I really
like. This song plays into our own perception of how we allow ourselves to judge people by how they dress, speak or by the color of there skin.Which is wrong, but we still do it...

In his song he make the reflexions of a teenager that he has to answer to his parents for the things that he is doing.

Cool lyrics! Perception is everything. So interesting to me how we each have our own reality. Five members of the same family can have completely different perceptions of the family dynamics.

This song really shows how I am trying to live my life. I have learned through life that a persons perception of life and it's happening can really shape a person. I am trying to change my perception on many of the things that happen in my life.
